The Irish Wolfhound, also known as the Cú Faoil, Big Dogs of Ireland, Irish Dogs, Wolfdogs of Ireland, and Greyhounds of Ireland, is a breed of dog in the Hound Group. As the tallest of all dog breeds the Irish Wolfhound requires a spacious home, and yet despite their commanding appearance they have a very sweet and gentle disposition. The Irish Wolfhound was recognized by the AKC in 1897 and AKC approved in 1950.
Dilated cardiomyopathy and bone cancer are the leading cause of death in Irish Wolfhounds. Like all deep-chested dog breeds, gastric torsion (bloat) is also common. The Irish Wolfhound is also affected by hereditary intrahepatic portosystemic shunt.
