Introduction
The Dachshund, also known as the Doxie, the hot dog, and the wiener dog, is a breed of dog in the Hound Group. This classic breed is known for their ‘hotdog’ type look because they are low to the ground and have almost absurdly short legs. Despite their comic appearance, the Dachshund is a very smart and athletic dog, and of course they are excellent house pets as well. The Dachshund was recognized by the AKC in 1885 and AKC approved in 2007.
The standard Dachshund is on average 18 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 16 and 32 pounds, the miniature Dachshund is on average 12 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 11 and 16 pounds, and the toy Dachshund is on average 10 inches high at the shoulders and weighs between 8 and 11 pounds. The Dachshund coat is very easy to maintain and requires only minimal grooming.
Temperament
The Dachshund breed has a personality that is playful, quick witted, loyal and loving to their family, brave, somewhat aloof at first to strangers, watchful, and stubborn. This breed is an excellent breed for families, but they must be socialized and trained well or they can develop abnormal shyness or aggressive behaviors.
The Dachshund does not like to be left for long periods of time or they will develop separation anxiety and destructive behaviors. These agile little dogs enjoy plenty of exercise too, and they are wonderful competition dogs. Dachshunds also have something called ‘small dog syndrome’. They do not seem to be aware of their small stature, and as a result they can get into trouble especially if they try to challenge larger dogs.
Health
The average life expectancy for this breed is between 12 and 15 years, but they are at increased risks for some health conditions which pet owners should be aware of.
History
The Dachshund bred originated in Germany in the early 1600’s. The breed’s streamlined hotdog shape, and brave bold attitude, was created to hunt, and eventually fight, badgers deep within their underground dens.
