Borzoi - Overview and History

Introduction

The Borzoi, also known as the Psovoi, the Russian Wolfhound, and the Russkaya Psovaya Borzaya, is a breed of dog in the Hound Group. They are known for their long silky hair which flows when they are on a fast run and for their exceptional grace and agility which is unusual in a large dog. The Borzoi was approved by the AKC in 1972.

Borzoi are very large dogs, and they need plenty of space to fulfill their exercise needs. Without enough exercise, Borzoi will develop destructive habits. The average Borzoi stands at least 26 inches tall at the withers, and they weigh between 60 and 105 pounds. Their long coat needs to be brushed daily, but they do not need to be bathed on a regular basis.

Temperament

The Borzoi has a very sensitive personality, but they also have an independent and stubborn nature. They are not aggressive, and they do not tolerate harsh or excessive handling. If they are in households with small children the children should be taught how to respectfully pet and play with the Borzoi, and the Borzoi should also be supervised around small children.

Borzoi need socialization and training at a young age, but they require a lot of time, patience, and tons of positive reinforcement to learn new commands. Borzoi rarely bark, and they are not good watch dogs.

Health

The average life expectancy of the Borzoi is between 9 – 12 years, and they are at increased risks for developing bloat, dysplasia, and progressive eye diseases.

History

The Borzoi breed is hundreds of years old and are originally from Russia. These dogs were bred to be running and hunting machines, and they were even used in packs to hunt wolves. Today, this breed is still in use by farmers in the Western U.S. to ward off coyotes and to keep large coyote populations off their land.
