Basset Hound - Overview and History

The Basset Hound, also known as the Basset, is a dog breed in the Hound Group. It is most well known for its stubby, but sturdy little legs, long flapping ears, and liquid brown eyes. Basset Hounds have one of the best noses in the hound group being second only to the Bloodhound. Basset Hounds were recognized by the AKC in 1885 and were AKC approved in 1964.

Basset Hound - Physical Characteristics

Basset Hounds have long, downward ears and powerful necks, with much loose skin around their heads, forming wrinkles. Their tails are long and tapered, stand upright with a curve and should also be tipped in white. Basset Hounds are also known for their hanging skin structure, which causes the face to occasionally look sad. This, for many people, adds to the breed's charm.

Basset Hound - Temperament

Basset Hounds are friendly and welcome the opportunity to make new friends. For this reason, this dog breed is an excellent pet for families with children and other pets. Basset Hounds are pack animals, and as such, a second pet is recommended if the Basset must be left alone while the family is away. Like Beagles, Bassets can be excitable when meeting a new person or dog.

Basset Hound - Health Characteristics

The average lifespan of a Basset Hound is about 11 years, typical for purebred dogs and for breeds similar in size to Bassets. Leading causes of death in Basset Hounds are cancer, old age, bloat, and cardiac issues.
