The Basenji is a breed of dog in the Hound Group. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1944 and accepted in 1990. One of the most unique characteristics of this dog breed is that is does not bark, instead on rare occasions the Basenji will emit a yodel like howl.
Basenjis are small, elegant-looking, short-haired dogs with erect ears, a tightly curled tail and a graceful neck. Some people consider the dog breed's appearance similar to that of a miniature deer. A Basenji's forehead is wrinkled, especially when the animal is young. Basenji eyes are typically almond shaped, giving them the appearance of a serious squint.
Basenjis have an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years, one to two years longer than the median longevity of other dog breeds of similar size. Most common causes of death in Basenjis are old age, urological issues, behavioral problems, and cancer.
