Ibizan Hound
Introduction
The Ibizan Hound dog, also known as the Ibizan Warren Hound, is a breed in the Hound Dog Group. This very old and unique looking breed has the distinction of being the “Watchdog of the Dead” as a life sized statue of a dog looking exactly like the Ibizan Hound was found inside the famous tomb of King Tutankhamen. The Ibizan Hound dog was AKC approved in 1989.
The average height of the Ibizan Hound is between 22 and 28 inches at the shoulders, and they weigh on average between 42 and 55 pounds (the females are usually lighter and smaller than the males). Their short coat is easy to care for.
Temperament
The medium sized, graceful, and agile Ibizan Hound almost has a deer like quality in look and temperament. This hound dog is very watchful, sensitive, gentle, and they will bond very closely with their family. While the Ibizan Hound has an independent nature, they enjoy being part of the family and pet owners of this hound dog should not kennel their pet or leave their pet alone for long periods of time. The Ibizan Hound also has a natural tendency to chase and hunt non-canine pets, so it is best not to have this breed as a pet in a home with cats, birds, hamsters, or mice.
The Ibizan Hound will get along with children of all ages, but younger children need to learn how to gently play with the delicate hound dog. This breed is also a fast gymnast, and they can easily jump or climb over low fences. Ibizan Hounds should be walked securely on a harness when out of the home and pet owners need to ensure that the Ibizan cannot escape out of a yard if one is available.
While the Ibizan Hound is not a high energy dog, they do require daily exercise. This dog needs to be socialized and trained at an early age using positive reinforcements.
