The Beauceron, also known as the Bas Rouge, Beauce Shepherd, Berger de Beauce, and French Shorthaired Shepherd, is a breed of dog in the Herding Group. This is a very old French breed of dog that was not well known outside of France. The Beauceron was approved by the AKC in 2006.
The Beauceron stands 24 to 27 inches and weighs 66 to 85 lbs. The Beaceron's standard color is black and tan, black, or harlequin. Other colors, such as the once prevalent tawny, gray, or gray and black, are now banned by the breed standard. A Beauceron must have double dew claws, forming well separated “thumbs” with nails on each rear leg.
