Bearded Collie - Overview and History

Introduction

The Bearded Collie, (also known as the Beardie, the Hairy Mou’ed Collie, the Highland Collie, and the Mountain Collie), is breed of dog in the Herding Group. This breed is one of the oldest breeds of Britain, and today they are still one of the most popular dogs used for sheep herding.

The average Bearded Collie stands well over 2 feet tall, and they are on average between 40 – 60 pounds. Beardies have very long coats which require a lot of attention and grooming. They need to be brushed and cleaned on a regular basis or their beautiful fur can mat. They are quick and agile dogs, and for their size they have a uniquely graceful gait. Beardies have an average lifespan of 12 – 14 years, but they are at an increased risk for some health conditions which owners should be aware of.

Temperament

Beardies have a friendly, confident, and companionable nature. They make perfect house pets for families with children, but female Beardies can sometimes try to dominant other dogs. They are devoted to their human companions, and they thrive on interaction with their owners and learning new tasks. These dogs are extremely intelligent and high energy, and they require a lot of mental and physical stimulation to keep boredom at bay.

History

The original history of the Bearded Collie has been lost to history, but photos of the breed were found in portraits from the late 1770’s. The popularity of the Beardies began in Scotland where they were used as working and competition show dogs. Their breed almost went extinct after World War II, but fortunately a few people who loved the breed and their herding instincts saved the breed from permanent extinction. Beardies entered the United States in the late 1950’s, and they were approved by the AKC in 1978.
