The Australian Shepherd, also known as Aussies, are a breed of dog in the Herding Group. Australian Shepherds were recognized by the AKC in 1991. Due to their working skills Aussies became very popular in the U.S., and they have played many starring roles in numerous Western TV shows, horse shows, and rodeos.
The Australian Shepherd's appearance varies greatly depending on the particular line's emphasis. As with many working dog breeds that are also shown in the ring, there are differences of opinion among breeders over what makes the ideal Australian Shepherd. Working Australian Shepherds tend to have shorter coats, are thinner and sometimes smaller. Show dogs are bred according to breed standard and can have long coats.
Australian Shepherds are unique with regard to temperament. The dog breed is energetic and requires exercise and enjoys working. Australian Shepherds are usually sweet and affectionate dogs that are faithful to their owners and are generally good with children. Most Australian Shepherds make wonderful family dogs, provided there is at least one figure to act as a leader and mentor to the dog.
Australian Shepherds typically live around 12.5 years but the breed's longevity may be declining. The median lifespan for breeds similar in size to Australian Shepherds are mostly between 11 and 13 years. The most common health issues noted by Australian Shepherd owners were eye problems.
