Non-Sporting Dog Breeds

Non-Sporting Dogs

The non-sporting group is made up of a large and diverse set of dog breeds. While other groups have a shared ancestry or purpose, dogs in the Non-Sporting Group do not. In fact, the breeds in this group couldn’t possibly be more different from one another. The dogs found in the Non-Sporting Group run the gamut in terms of size, appearance, and popularity. In this group you’ll find large dogs like the Chow Chow, small dogs like the Bichon Frise, and every size of dog in between. Their coats can range from short and sleek like the spotted coat of the Dalmatian to the curly coat of the Poodle. Some dogs in the group are extremely popular like the Lhasa Apso and French Bulldog. Others, like the Schipperke and Xoloitzcuintli are a bit less common at the local dog park.

The personalities and temperament of each breed are unique as well. Experts can’t make any generalizations about the behavioral traits of the Non-Sporting Group. The tendencies of each breed are unique and can be traced to their individual backgrounds. Some breeds make excellent watch dogs, while others are friendly lap dogs. Some are good for apartment life, while others should only live in homes with large outdoor areas to run and play. Because it is so difficult to make generalizations about the breeds in the Non-Sporting Group, prospective owners should be sure to research breeds thoroughly to understand their unique characteristics and to determine whether or not that breed is well-suited for life in your home.
