Introduction

While most dogs will show obvious symptoms due to the pain in their unhealthy paws, some dogs have a high tolerance to pain and it may be difficult to know if they are having a problem with their paws. The most common signs of unhealthy paws in dogs include pain, signs of infection, and behavioral changes.

Symptoms of Unhealthy Paws in Dogs

If a dog’s paws are very painful, it will most likely have difficulty walking on the affected paws which will result in limping or stepping gingerly on the paws. Pain in the paws may also radiate up the leg and into the shoulder or neck area and dogs may become sensitive or even aggressive if these areas are touched.

Signs of infection in the paws can include blood or puss like discharge on the paws which may or may not be accompanied by a foul odor. The paws may also feel hot to the touch, and the dog may develop a fever. In an effort to clean the paws and relieve discomfort, the dog may continually lick the paws. The paws may also become swollen or red.

Unhealthy and painful paws often affect a dog’s behavior. The dog may eat less, become depressed or lethargic, and an otherwise happy go lucky dog may begin to become irritable or aggressive. These symptoms may also be caused by a fever which develops if the paws are infected. The dog may also become anxious or fearful and attempt to hide and the dog may shun physical contact and play.
