Congestion and sneezing for last 3 months in my Dachshund

I have a 15 yr old, male dachshund, who has 22 different allergies, gets an allergy shot once a month. He started having congestion and sneezing attacks about 3 months ago. My Vet put him on 2 different antibiotics, 2 different antihistamines, checked him for foreign body in nasal passage or abscessed tooth, took x-rays of his nasal passages and his chest but everything showed up negative. He started off with just clear thin mucous, now it is a little thicker and more yellowish in color. I showed this to my Vet. Now he is on another antibiotic, antihistamine, and decogestant. So far no improvements. The sneezing attacks stopped but occasionally sneezes. They also told me it could be a possible tumor in his nasal passage or on his brain. I would have to get an actual cat scan to find out further. I don't want to have to pay $1200.00 to get an internist to look at him and do a cat scan. What do I do next? Any suggestions, and anyone with a dog that had similar symptoms like Pistol's? I am just tired of seeing my dog suffer with that congestion.

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear you are going through such a rough period with your dog's health. I don’t know if you have done this already, but I would recommend seeking out a specialist.

Another good way to cut costs is try setting up an appointment at a teaching hospital. Since these are students learning, it can also help to reduce the costs but without reducing the level of care.

Hi. I am going thru the same exact thing. My doxie is 5 yrs. 5 months of congestion and sneezing. I've had her through exactly the same tests. Now I have the CT scan decision to make. The Dr says that if they do a CT scan and it is a tumor - it tiwll not likely be operable anyway. If I have any success I'll share. Please do the same. JD

Hi, I'm Flo, from Alberta Canada. Would your dog have breathedd in some foreign body into his lungs.....such as a bug ???Or is there maybe some sort of mold in your house, or maybe dirty carpets OR something you cleaned your carpets with ??? Since he as with babies so close to the floor check that out. Or maybe something outside in the grass that you are using, or if yiu walk him something someone else maybe using ??? Hope you found this helpful. Good luck with your puppy !!!!

Hi, I am having the same problem with my 8 yr old chihuahua. I feel helpless. We have spent over $2000 trying to find out what is wrong and still nothing. Their next step is also the CT scan, but we can't afford to dish out another $1200. If we knew it would solve the problem, we would do it in a heartbeat, even if we had to borrow the money, but when they still have no answers after $2000+ dollars, it just seems like a gamble. I have her on benadryl, but that isn't curing the problem. And she still just takes cat naps and then barks and hacks when she is awake. We are in to our 4 week now and she just doesn't seem to be getting any better. Let me know if you are able to find out something and I will do the same.

I wanted to know if you did the cat scan or not? I decided against it. He still has congestion and sneezing but it is not ongoing like before. I think it is just something in the air. He is very allergic to so many things and the weather here in Louisiana is not that great. He is doing fine. He gets his little congestion attacks when he gets excited, and he sneezes when I guess something is bothering his allergies. I don't think it is anything majorly serious. It is just something we have to live with. How is your doxie doing? Any better? I hate it when we feel so helpless for our pets. They are so wonderful to me(all animals are)! I hope your baby is doing better.

Did you get your dog allergy tested? Could be allergies? Has your dog lost any weight since the sickness started? How is your baby doing now? I hope he/she is better.
