In order to prevent a flea explosion in your home, here are some tips that will help to keep your pets free of fleas.
Tips for Flea Prevention
Whenever you are bringing a new pet into your home, take a moment to make sure that the pet does not have fleas. Bring a flea comb with you to check the pet, and if the pet does have fleas take the pet to a groomer or veterinarian to be treated. This is especially important if you already have other pets in your home.
If you are moving into a new home, and the previous tenants in the home had pets, have the home treated for fleas. The carpets should be thoroughly cleaned, and the floors should be vacuumed and mopped. You do not normally need to resort to chemical treatments unless it is apparent that fleas are already established in the home.
While veterinarian clinics do everything they can to ensure that their patients do not get fleas, sometimes a flea will end up coming home with you after you pick your pet up from the veterinarian. To ensure that your pet does not accidentally bring fleas home after a visit to the veterinarian, use a flea comb to check your pet before you return home.
In some areas that are hot and humid, flea infestations are a continual problem. In these cases, a topical flea treatment can be used to keep fleas out of your home and off of your pet. Talk to your veterinarian about what type of flea treatment is best for your pet and your home.
