Introduction
Cats become infected with bordetella when they come into contact with the bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica. Cats can become infected with this disease from other cats and dogs that are infected with the bacteria.
Cats at Risk of Bordetella
Bordetella is not diagnosed often in cats, but when it does occur it seems to strike most often in cats living in crowded conditions. Bordetella is a highly infectious disease, and the Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria are easily spread through airborne particles. In catteries, shelters, and overcrowded pet stores, at some point in time a cat will come into these places with bordetella and the bacteria can quickly spread. Cats that live in overcrowded and unhygienic living conditions are at a higher risk for developing this disease. Areas that house multiple cats can reduce the risk of feline bordetella by maintaining a clean and disinfected environment.
Dogs can also carry the same type of bordetella bacteria which affects cats. Dogs are more prone to developing this condition if they come into contact with other dogs which carry the bacteria. If a dog becomes infected with bordetella, then the dog can bring the bacteria home to the household cat. Outdoor cats can also come into contact with dogs that carry the bacteria and likewise become infected.
Preventing Bordetella Infection in Cats
Feline and canine vaccinations for bordetella are available. Vaccinations for cats are not usually recommended unless the cats are housed in an environment where there are multiple cats and where the cat population continually changes. Pet owners who own both cats and dogs should vaccinate their dog for bordetella not only to prevent their dog from becoming infected, but in order to prevent their dog from bringing the bacteria to any cats in the household.
