Symptoms of Feline Cataracts

Introduction

The development of cataracts in cats is normally a sign of another underlying medical condition that is causing the cataract to appear. In other cases the cataract can be the result of an injury to the eye frequently caused as a result of fighting with another cat. If you notice any of the following symptoms of cataracts in your cat’s eyes, or any changes to your cat’s eyes at all, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Symptoms of Cataracts

The main symptom of cataracts in cats is an icy blue spot that develops on the pupil of the eye. The spot may appear small and increase slowly over time, or the spot may quickly spread over the pupil. In advanced cataracts, the vision of the cat can be severely affected. However, some cats do not show any symptoms of decreased vision especially if one eye is still normal.

Uveitis

When the cataract is caused by an underlying medical condition, additional symptoms may accompany the cataract. For example, uveitis is an inflammatory condition of the eye that is often caused by an immune disorder or disease. Uveitis can contribute to the development of a cataract. Symptoms of uveitis include:

  • Squinting
  • Watery eyes
  • Change in the color of the eyes
  • Abnormal pupil size or shape
  • Cloudy appearance to the eye

When uveitis is accompanied by a cataract these symptoms, in addition to a blue cataract spot, will appear together.

Eye conditions, and cataracts that develop as a result of another underlying conditions, can rapidly accelerate into painful conditions which can permanently damage the cat’s eye. Prompt medical treatment for any eye condition can help to save the cat’s vision, relieve painful conditions, and treat any underlying medical issue that is harming the eye.
