Introduction
Cats can suffer from a variety of allergies, just like people, but the symptoms of an allergic cat do not include sneezing and watery eyes. Most allergy symptoms in cats affect the cat’s skin, and the symptoms can often become so severe that the cat becomes extremely agitated and uncomfortable. If your cat is suffering from allergies, here are the most common symptoms that you may notice.
Symptoms of Allergies in Cats
Itching and scratching is one of the first signs of allergies. The itching may be all over the body, or it may be focused on areas around the ears and neck area. Constant licking is another sign of allergies. In many cases the cat will lick a specific area like the base of the tail or the groin area. Hair loss around the ears, neck, groin, and base of the tail may occur. In severe cases of allergies, lesions or red crusty bumps may begin to form around the head, neck, and back area. The skin may also become inflamed, red, or slowly begin to thicken. The above symptoms of allergies are usually caused by allergic reactions to insects, parasites, or from inhaling an allergen such as pollen. Many of these symptoms are seasonal, and pet owners may notice that the symptoms become worse during the spring and summer months.
If a cat is suffering from a food allergy, the symptoms are a bit different. In this case the cat will experience vomiting and diarrhea. The ears may become swollen and appear infected, and the cat will continually itch throughout any time of the year. Hair loss from itching and licking may occur around the head, ears, and neck area.
If you notice any of these symptoms in your cat, take your cat to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Allergies can be uncomfortable to say the least, and if allergies are left untreated secondary bacterial infection can develop on the cat’s skin. Fortunately there are a number of treatments available that can help your cat to lead a more comfortable, allergy free, life.
