Introduction
Allergies in cats are a condition that occurs when a cat suffers from a hypersensitive immune reaction to a specific type of allergen. In most cases cats experience allergies due to flea infestations or allergies to specific types of allergens which come into contact with the skin or are inhaled from the air. In rare cases cats exhibit allergies due to certain types of foods or food ingredients.
Symptoms of Allergies in Cats
The signs of allergies in cats are constant itching, continual grooming, increased number of hair balls and coughing, wheezing, vomiting, and diarrhea. In some cases, cats develop a condition known as feline miliary dermatitis as a result of their allergy which causes the skin to develop areas of small crusty scabs and lesions.
Diagnosing Allergies in Cats
The diagnosis of an allergy in cats is usually concluded though the cat’s symptoms, medical history, blood tests, and response to treatment. If cats continue to experience allergic symptoms, a patch test may be performed to try to determine what specific allergen is causing the symptom.
Treating Allergies in Cats
The treatment for allergies in cats includes removal of a known allergen, and using prescription medication and shampoos to treat inflamed and irritated skin. Prescription medications may also be used to suppress the allergic immune reaction if the cause of the allergy is not determined.
Outlook for Cats with Allergies
The prognosis for allergies in cats is excellent. Once the allergen is removed from the cat’s environment, any symptoms and irritations decline then disappear over a period of time. In severe instances, cats may need to be placed on long term prescription medications to suppress the allergic reactions and unwanted side effects may occur.
