Introduction
Cats, like people, can suffer from asthma, and the symptoms of asthma in cats are similar to the symptoms that asthmatic persons suffer from as well. Asthma in cats itself is caused by an allergic reaction which leads to an inflammation of the airways and mucous buildup in the lungs. The symptoms usually begin to appear in young or middle aged cats, but older cats can sometimes become asthmatic as well. Extensive tests may help to find the asthmatic trigger, but often cat owners are left to wonder what causes the attacks.
Symptoms of Asthma
Once a cat begins to suffer from an asthmatic allergic reaction, symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath occur. Depending on the severity of the reaction, these symptoms may be mild or very severe. Sometimes a cat will become lethargic, stop eating, or lose weight due to the effects of asthma. In very severe cases a cat may have to resort to open mouth breathing and the gums and tongue may become a blue or purplish color; asthma symptoms that are this severe will require immediate emergency treatment.
Fortunately asthma in cats, and the frightening symptoms that may occur because of it, can be treated with medication. If your cat is experiencing any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible; tests should be performed to rule out any other causes of the symptoms, and a chest x-ray should be taken. With proper diagnosis and medication, your asthmatic cat will be able to lead a normal, healthy, and happy life.
