Treating Heart Murmurs in Cats

Introduction

Treating heart murmurs in cats cannot normally be effectively addressed without discovering why the heart murmur is occurring. Once the cause of the heart murmur is identified, a treatment program can be formulated.

Heart Murmurs Caused by Other Disorders

By far, the most common causes of heart murmurs in cats are due to hyperthyroid disease and feline cardiomyopathy disease. Hyperthyroid disease can be treated through surgery and medication therapies. Feline cardiomyopathy often requires a combination of medications that will reduce the workload on the heart, increase the elasticity of the heart muscle, and improve the efficiency of the heart.

If the heart murmur is caused by a deformity in the heart values, there are some surgeries that can repair the function of the heart, but many pet owners are unable to afford these types of surgery and not all deformities can be repaired.

Heart Murmurs Caused by Parasites

Heart murmurs in cats may also be caused by severe anemia that is the result of flea or tick infestations. In this case, flea and tick treatments and nutritional supplements can effectively treat the heart murmur.

Lifestyle changes are also recommended for cats with severe heart murmurs. These cats should be in a calm, soothing, and comfortable environment where they can rest and relax. In households with children, pet owners will need to talk with their children about the cat’s special needs and requirements for rest.
