Introduction
The Persian cat, also known as the Longhair or the Persian Longhair, is an older breed of cat with mysterious origins. Today, this breed is one of the most popular of all feline breeds due to their exceptional beauty, kind temperaments, and easy going personalities.
Persian breeds have very stout medium sized body types, and while they enjoy playing they do not jump or climb very well because of their shorter square physique.
They are characterized by their extremely long fluffy hair which comes in almost every color, flat facial features, large expressive round eyes, and short ears. Their coat requires a lot of maintenance including daily brushing and regular bathing. Many Persians need their eyes wiped occasionally too as they can have difficulty cleaning their faces.
Temperament
The Persian is a quiet cat that is known to meow only on an occasional basis, but even with their quiet temperaments they are not shy. The Persian enjoys playtimes, and forms very close bonds with their primary owner. They will do well in almost any type of household environment as long as they are given plenty of attention along with their own personal space.
Health
The Persian is a healthy breed with a life expectancy of 15 years. Though they can carry a gene which causes kidney disease.
Fortunately there is a test which can identify this gene. Persians which carry the gene are being spayed and neutered to help eliminate the gene from the population pool.
History
Persians may have originated from Iran, and it is believed that they made their way out of this region hundreds of years ago through trading routes. Their exact origin is unclear, but historical paintings and writings have firmly established this breed as one of the older breeds of cats.
