Seasonal Cat Safety

Halloween Cat Safety

Introduction

Halloween is a fun time of the year to everyone but the cat. Cat’s do not like this time of year because of the noise, excitement, and people dressed up to look like anything but the people they know. In addition, some cats get dressed up for Halloween. While they do look cute all dressed up, where the cat is concerned this is not exactly their favorite thing to do.

Halloween Safety Tips

Pet owners need to remember that cats typically do not like noise and they do not like change. Taking them to see your family and friends, unless you do this often, is seen by the cat as change. Most cats will hide when the trick and treaters come to the door, and some may even try to get out of the house. The latter is more prevalent if your cat has been a stray.

Catnapping at this time of the year is more common than one might think. For that reason, at Halloween especially, the cat should be placed in a room with a bowl of water, some food, litter, and a comfortable place to sleep. The door should be closed and no one should be let in except you. Occasionally go into the room to assure the cat you still love it and when the excitement is over you can let it out.

Child trick or treaters will likely not hurt your cat(s) but older ones may. When you open your door to anyone that comes to trick and treat do not let it be known you have a cat. A neighbor child that knows you have one might ask about it, but a short answer such as “its fine but does not like noise and it’s hiding” is the perfect answer.
